Yalumba ’’The Signature’’ 2001 #16163
Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz
The Signature 1999 honours John Edward Heine, 1944-2002, Director, Chairman, mentor and mate of Yalumba since 1986. On the international corporate stage for Sola International he was an astute and cunning commercial leader and crusader for global integration.
Away from the cut and thrust of business, he harboured a dream of involvement in areas of philanthropy and saw it as his prime focus in retirement. He revelled in the fellowship of wine, food and good company, always wearing a smile; then retreated to the solitude and tranquillity of any nearby wilderness to reflect and fish for trout on the fly.
An intent listener and razor sharp observer, we miss him. It is sad that we will not share this wine together. But we will indeed with Barb, Pete, Kate and Marc.
The 1999 vintage promised to be yet again of exceptional quality. The fruit for The Signature is sourced from some of the oldest Barossa Cabernet and Shiraz resources, producing small volumes of intensely powerful fruit. The blend consists of 56% Shiraz and 44% Cabernet. Yalumba’s The Signature 1999 is dense red in colour with purple hues. The nose develops into plum and cedar with lifted dark cherries and violets, supported with spicy vanillin oak. The palate is big and rich with sweet fruit of plums, cherries and layered licorice and spices. Prominent tannins fill the middle palate with a firm finish, giving a very well structured palate built to last.
